The Face of Forgiveness‏

From Tony Evans’ sermon on Forgiveness – March 9, 2014, based on Colossians 3:13 – Forgiving each other.

Just as the Lord forgives, we should also forgive. What allows us to forgive is that we recognize that we are forgiven for our wrongs in Christ Jesus. If we lose sight that we have been forgiven, then it makes us almost impossible to forgive. forgivenessForgiveness – It is the choice to release a person of an offense committed against you. In the spirit of unforgiveness, we are being held hostage in our circumstances, in our relationships – by our emotions. The devil knows that he can control us because we cannot move forward because of our struggle with forgiveness. To refuse to forgive is to burn a bridge that you will need to cross, if not today, then one day.

Christ prayed “forgive us our debts, as we forgive those who trespass against us.” In order to be forgiven – you must be a forgiver. Those who show mercy shall receive mercy. Ephesians 4: 30-32 Do not grieve the Holy Spirit … And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.

Joseph is the face of forgiveness in the Bible. Everything that was done to him by his brothers in 22 years, he forgave them and reconciled with them. Genesis 50: 20  God orchestrated this – for what you meant for bad, God meant for good. You will never know how God will use what had been done against you until forgiveness has indeed occurred.

What about the pain? It hurts, and forgiveness may not ease the pain. Time heals all wounds. When you let it go, the pain dissipates. As long as you hold on to unforgiveness the pain will not go away. 1 Corin 13:5  Love keeps no record of wrong.

Father create in us a forgiving spirit. Not only a spirit to forgive, but a spirit of reconciliation. As you remember no wrong in us, let us not remember the offenses of those who have done us wrong. 1prayerLet us be open to all that you have for us. Let us not be hindered in our journey by a spirit of unforgiveness and the inability to control our emotions. Let us forgive as you have forgiven us. In this season of Thanksgiving, we thank you for everything we have in and through Christ Jesus. Let us not forget His benefits. As it is written in Ezekiel 36:26 A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh, so let it be for us In Jesus name we pray. Amen.
